The American Dream Book Tour & Protest Across America
By Mike Palecek
4/14/07
You open up their hearts, and heres what youll find some humans aint human, some people aint kind.
? John Prine
DRIVING TO DES MOINES ? Its sixty-three songs from Sheldon, Iowa to Rochester, Minnesota.
I got my iPod back up and running. I wont be alone anymore.
Got the Dixie Chicks, John Prine, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, John Denver, The Clash, Bill Hicks, Cat Stevens, The Soggy Bottom Boys, Alison Krause, The Eagles, Green Day, Greg Brown, Woody Guthrie, Steve Forbert, Harry McClintock, all squeezed into the brown Honda.
Austin, Minnesota is thirty-four songs from Rochester.
It is the home of the Spam Museum. Im probably in there somewhere, maybe in the hall of fame with all my emails over the past ten years trying to hawk my books.
In the early 1990s, Ruth, Sam, Emily and I lived in Byron, eight miles west of Rochester. We owned the tiny Byron Review, ran it out of the north side of our home on Byron Avenue. We scrimped and saved and hustled and fought with the city council, school board, lumber yard, elevator, fire department, and won the newspaper of the year award from the MNA in 1994. We went out of business later in the year.
Sitting in traffic in Rochester was the first time I felt kind of vulnerable with my bumper stickers: 9-11 Was An Inside Job, Jail Bush, Impeach Bush. Rochester is a conservative island in Minnesota. But it wasnt really that. I think I was just tired, depressed a little from having to leave home and think of three months ahead of me on the road, and so maybe I was poking along a little and getting some looks from my fellow Americans.
But Ive got a license to drive slow ? Iowa plates.
And now I remember how fast people in southeast Minnesota drive. They are busy people, getting things done, going places. I try not to get in the way.
Sitting in heavy traffic on Broadway Avenue in Rochester I kept an eye on the fat blonde woman behind me with no neck driving the forest green Dodge Caravan. Had my hand on the auto-lock in case she opened her door.
Once when I was a seminarian at the College of St. Thomas in Saint Paul in 1979 I flipped a trucker the bird as I drove past him in my 1959 brown and white Chevy. Just because I thought I could, and get away with it.
As I sang along with an Eagles song I could see a familiar truck getting bigger in the rearview mirror.
I had to stop and the trucker pulled up next to me, got out of his truck, came around to my door and pounded on the door and the window, saying somebody should teach me a lesson.
I did learn a lesson.
Dont stop.
Or if you have to stop, keep one eye on the lady in the fur-lined jacket in the side mirror.
When we were in Byron in the early 90s I did a story on the Leonard Peltier case, and interviewed an FBI agent in the Rochester office.
One of them, David Price, was mentioned in the book In The Spirit of Crazy Horse, and had been accused by some in the American Indian Movement of having murdered Anna Mae Aquash. He wasnt in the office the day I was there, so I did not get to meet him.
The other, Don Dealing, did visit with me. He talked about Peltier, Jack Coler, Ronald Williams, Wounded Knee.
He had been at Wounded Knee as a member of some sort of FBI special forces team.
By searching Google for Don Dealing tonight I found that he testified in 2004 in a trial regarding the death of Anna Mae Aquash. He says he was the first FBI agent on the scene. I dont recall talking to him about that. In the 2004 testimony he also says that his only knowledge of COINTELPRO is through what he has seen through media and that sort of a thing.
Have you ever met an FBI agent? I have talked to a few, while in custody, as a reporter, watching a friend be arrested by a boatload of them once in Omaha. They dont seem human. They have a non-terrestrial aura. Stay away from them if you can. Your life will be richer for it.
Anyway, I spoke last night to the southeast Minnesota peacemakers group in Rochester, perhaps the most organized peace group in the continental USA. They have name tags and agendas and motions and seconds, and non-acidic tea.
In my talk I raise the question of whether Senator Paul Wellstone was assassinated by the Bush government. I really didnt know what to expect in giving the talk in Minnesota. But during and afterwards some said they agreed, and some thanked me for saying out loud what was on peoples minds.
They were not aware of Jim Fetzers book, American Assassination.
And so when someone asked what additional information I had about the Wellstone affair, I told them about the book. And I said that an electro-magnetic weapon was a possibility, and told how the FBI was on the scene too soon not to have left Minneapolis before the plane crashed. And the fire burned blue-white, which is how an electrical fire burns.
These are things I found out from reading Fetzers book.
I have to admit, out loud, that a lot of what I say comes not from knowing, but from feeling.
I dont apologize for that.
I dont think there is anything wrong with saying what you feel. I would actually like to have someone show me, to my satisfaction, that I am wrong about Bush and 9-11, Bush and Wellstone. That would be fine with me.
To have to imagine the alternative, that persons within our own government did these things, is not particularly easy to live with. I would be glad to let it go.
I first found out about Wellstones death when I turned on my computer that day and went to Common Dreams and there was Wellstones photo. I then went over to run on the treadmill at nearby Dordt College, and the Wellstone news was on the TV in the corner. A couple of college girls were snickering, implying that he got what he deserved. Gotta love those pro-lifers.
The timing of the death of Wellstone was perfect for the Bush administration. They needed that seat to control the Senate. Wellstone stood in the way of a lot of things.
Think how excited they would be at about that time, after pulling off 9-11, and set up perfectly to run the table, to take over the world. Would people like this let one guy stand in their way after all the work and struggle they had committed to become rich and powerful?
Not likely.
There was an investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that pilot error was responsible for the plane not maintaining adequate air speed, which led to a stall from which they could not recover.
And so we can be certain Wellstone was not murdered, because a commission said he was not.
Well, I dont agree.
I think these things can be rigged: the Warren Commission and the 9-11 commission come to mind.
I just think someone like Wellstone, who had heart, who was twice the man, twice the human being, that George W. Bush is, deserved better. He deserves justice. He deserves a real investigation.
He deserves to not be forgotten.
See you in Des Moines [The Ritual Cafe, April 14, 3 pm], Iowa City [Public Library,330 pm.].

I finally got time to watch the Houston 0-0 LA game from Sunday night, and here are a couple of thoughts:
-The Spanish speaking announcers always say a players full name, or on special occasion just the first name, but never just the last name. Must be a cultural thing. Always Eddie Robinson or Chris Albright and occasionally Landon.
-The lead announcer always mispronounced Craig Waibel. He kept saying Cray-g Way-bull instead of Cray-g Why-bull.
-I see LA is wearing a more Emerald Green this season as opposed to last years Forest Green.
-And Houston is wearing more of a Department Of Transportation Orange this season compared to last years Halloween Orange.
-The upcoming change in LA team colors really has me bummed out. I love the gold tops and green shorts, with the sash. We dont need more teams wearing blue and/or red. Damn. They have such a unique look.
-Who was the guy starting at rightback for LA? Ty Harden? Who is that? No one else with some experience was available? They did get the clean sheet, so OK. But, hmmm. Harden is a first year player on the development roster.
-LA also had Ian Russel starting at Centerback.
-What is Santino Quarantas problem? Is he back to being fat and lazy already?
-Paul Dalglish came on in the second half for Houston, but was subbed out for another midfielder a few minutes later after teammate Ryan Cochran was red carded. Dalglish looked very pissed off about getting pulled.

Ives Galarcep at the North Jersey Times looks at the situation of a player drafted by Columbus but not willing to sign for the developmental contract rate of $12,900. I get lots of grief every time I say that this pay scale is way too low, and actually insulting to supposed professionals in MAJOR League Soccer. There is nothing MAJOR about $12,900. People email me saying that this is the going rate, take it or leave it. Im not convinced this isnt a joke of an offer from MLS. The kid is from New Jersey and could live at home if Columbus would let him go or trade his rights, but they wont.

Why did Rino Gattuso of Milan take that silly dive late in the match v Bayern? He was probably trying to get Bayerns Marc Van Bommel sent off. The two ran into each other and MVBs hand brushed Gatuso just below the throat. Gatuso went down hard holding his face and rolling on the ground in agony. The referee called a foul. Gatuso was pleading for more. It was disgraceful. But why did he do it? What is the point? Why is this crap considered by some players as the thing they need to do? NBA Playoff Beat: Talk Talk.
by MC
In the NBA Today:
-The Pistons have finally managed to dispatch the Orlando Magic. The Motor City crew defeated the inexperienced Floridians, 97-93, thereby the first team to earn the first ticket to the second round of the playoffs. Interesting to note that former Pistons Darko Millicic and Grant Hill both scored in double digits and had decent games, but there efforts, coupled with those of Dwight Howard, who has been erratic in the postseason (not to mention terrible from the charity stripe; Howards free throw shooting percentage has indeed been a CHARITY CASE), were just not enough to overcome the veteran poise of the men from Detroit. If things continue going down the road were seeing footprints on now, then were set to see a Bulls-Pistons tiff come round 2. Boy oh boy, will the Ben Wallace factor be a story there. Oh yes, I hope that the game I woke up at 3am to see wasnt the last NBA contest Grant Hill will ever be participating in. His maturity, and overall athletic ability, is something that the league has benefitted from, really, for over a decade now. Id hate to see him walk away from the game not having won a title.
-The Spurs took a 2-1 series lead over the pesky Nuggets today. Guess who took center stage for the Spurs? Robert Horry and Michael Finley. Why even attempt to teach old dogs new tricks when old dogs habits are just oh so fun to watch, and beneficial to your collective success?
-We could very well be on the eve of the dethroning of the Miami Heat. Is that a good thing? Perhaps. No one wants to see defending champions fight too hard while on crutches. I mean, as exciting as Wade can be, and as dominating Shaquille can still be on some nights, theyve been caught, this year, winning and losing by putting medicated patches onto gaping wounds. Hand the hardware to a healthier, hungrier, younger, group. Zos had his time, and so have J-Will, Walker, and the Glove. Phoenix, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Utah, Cleveland, Houston, San Antonio (Id hardly call them whippersnappers, but hey, they are downright scary and respectably unflustered by big game situations when making things happen matters the most)and maybe even Toronto and New Jersey, are standing by (sorry Denver and Washington, I dont think youre quite ready for the big show yet, with or without Agent Zero, and with or without AI, Camby, and Melo; too much inconsistency here). Ill have more on this one come tomorrow.
-Utah and Houston are tied at 2 games apiece. The Jazz got solid contributions on the O end from Mehmet Okur, Matt Harpring, Boozer, and Williams, and managed to swarmYao Ming and TMac withenough zone D to force them into bad shooting nights. Next game is in Houston. I still feelthat its anybodys series at this point, but Yao Ming, and especially, McGrady, seem more driven at this point. Rockets, in my mind, seem poised tomove on, but itll be very, very, close. Besides, Sloan deserves another dayin the sun more than Jeff Van Gundy. Why? Anyone beaten up as much as Sloan has by Michael Jordan and co. deserve another crack at the big onenot because he and his club werent part of the NBAs elite. Its just that, well, Michael, on the court, was god.No man in a dapper suit can beat god.Really.

-I really hope Toronto manages to come back in their series. Ive always been a fan of European players and players who have experience playing in Europe, plus, I think Bargnani has a legit chance to become the next Dirk, with time. Moreover, Anthony Parker rocks!!! Hehe. Whos laughing now?
-If Rick Carlisle wants history to repeat itself, he should coach in Sacto next year. Hey Ron Ron, remember me? =)
-Sebastian Telfair is incredibly careless, and stupid. Period. What a waste of remarkable athletic talent. =(

06-07 Reg Season Awards (Part II)
In Part II, were dealing with the 6th Man & All-Defense awards. The 6th Man can always be a little tricky to gauge because guys can change roles throughout the season due to injuries, trades, or coaching decisions. The best example is with Manu this year: is he really a true 6th man? He technically qualifies for the award, and actually plays 5 fewer minutes a game than Barbosa. So if people dont have qualms with Barbosa as a 6th Man, you really shouldnt with Manu either. Manu actually plays fewer minutes a game than Lee & Maggette as well.
6th Man: Manu Ginobili
1) Ginobili“It was a difficult decision but I gave him the nod barely over Barbosa. Both guys offensive production is pretty equal but I gave Manu the slightest edge because I feel hes a better all-around defender. He is actually one of the more productive players in the league. In only 27 mins per, Manus averages 16.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.5 spg, 46% shooting, and a career best 39.7% from 3pt. Very underrated defender, just a totally disruptive force on the defensive end.
2) Barbosa“Brazilian Blur has taken his game to the next level and could easliy be a 2nd option on most every other team. Extremely hard to contain off the dribble, and has turned himself into a deadly outside shooter the last 2 years. I remember when he was entering the draft, his key weakness was his shooting, but he seems to put those worries to bed. Barbosas numbers are very similar to Manus”18.1, 4.1 apg, 2.6 rpg, 1.2 spg, 47.6% & 43.5% from 3pt.
3) Maggette“Probably should have been starting all season, but he played the majority of the season coming off the pine. I have mentioned many times Coreys Jekyll & Hyde-type game but I think the positives outweigh the bad. Might not be anyone better in the NBA at getting to the foul line more than Corey (8.2 fta per is ridiculous in 30 mpg) and he hits them at a nice 82% clip. Also a very good rebounder from the SF position (5.7 rpg). Just have to deal with the dubious decision making”bad shot selection & mindless turnovers”and easily could be a shutdown defender if he wanted.
4) Stackhouse“His scoring support off the bench is invaluable to the Mavs. Instant offense when he comes in, reliable mid-range game and has been hitting from deep surprisingly well this year”39%, which is by far the best 3pt. output for this career 30.5% shooter. Underrated defender.
5) D. Lee“Mr. Efficiency. Had to knock him down this list some because of too many missed games. Great energy off the bench which helps him be a force on the boards. Understands his role offensively and does not try to force things he cant do, which is evident in his 60% shooting. Nothing special on defense.
Honor Mention: C. Atkins; J. Calderon; J. Childress; Harpring; L. Head; Korver

M.H.s Picks
SIXTH MAN
1. Leandro Barbosa, Phoenix
2. Manu Ginobili, San Antonio
3. Jerry Stackhouse, Dallas
I dont have much commentary for this one - Jay Aych makes a good argument re: Manu, but I dunno, he still feels like a starter in 6th mans clothing, whereas Leandro is more of a classic 6th man, who comes in and changes the pace of the ballgame entirely. It amazes me how quickly Barbosas gone from a freakishly fast/quick young player with potential to a guy on the cusp of stardom at 24. The Suns staff has done a great job developing him, with DAntonis brother Dan being a big part of that.
“”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"-
Defensive Player of Year: Tim Duncan
1st Team:
Duncan“Basically can just pencil him onto this list every year if you want. Quietly changes/blocks shots as good as any in the league. Never really swats the ball, always seems to just block shots that are still in the shooters hand. Has an innate ability of what I like to call poke-blocking the ball then securing the shot in the same sequence. 5th in the league in blocks. It was a tough choice between him Bowen for DPOY, but I gave the slightest tiebreaker to Duncan for being a superior rebounder & mental safety blanket for the perimeter players.
Bowen“The defensive demise of Bowen has been greatly exaggerated. I think a lot people (one certain internet pundit comes to mind) just have a knee-jerk reaction where they see Bowen is 35, and they just assume he will not be as good, instead of actually watching carefully; we have been in his corner all season. If he has lost something, it aint much. With Battier, probably the most fundamentally sound defender in NBA”great balance, good knee bend. Maybe the key to why he is still successful (besides desire & smarts) while not being a tremendous athlete is choppy feet. He puts down & picks up his feet very quickly, always keeps them moving, sort of like a good running back who takes quick, small strides. Bowen still continues to consistently challenge shots as well as any perimeter defender in the league.
Camby“Marcus does absolutely everything he can to help Denver defensively; its not his fault the perimeter defense is severely lacking. Always felt this guy was underrated, its not just his shot-blocking ability, but the league leading 3.3 bpg do help his case. Personally, I think he guards Duncan better than anyone. 2nd in the league in defensive boards helps his cause.
Battier“Mr. Fundamental. Combination of great technique, smarts, & dogged determination. Tremendous on-the-ball or as a team defender”one of the best in the league at taking charges. Constantly beats his man to the spot. A player like Battier is an absolute necessity for every team.
Okafor“Dont know if there is a laterally quicker center in the NBA; the amount of the area he covers is amazing. His help & recovery is good as any big in the league. Simply a force in the painted area, and has erased any lingering doubts if he can guard centers. Non-stop action on the defensive end.
2nd Team:
Garnett“Another guy you can just pencil onto this list every year. Cleans up a lot of the messes that are left from some his teammates lackluster effort. Best defensive rebounder in the league, to go along with 1.7 bpg & 1.2 spg.
Josh Howard“The best defender on the Mavs. A great individual defender, but also a tremendous help defender as well. Basically, the Mavs version of Scottie Pippen who will guard multiple positions & patrol the defensive end like a free safety. Love those long arms.
Hinrich“This guy usually gets the assignment of defending the oppositions best guard. Works his tail off every nite. No one guards Wade better in my estimation, and that in itself, is huge. Uses great balance & his underrated athleticism to his advantage.
Marion“A lot of a push for Shawn to be DPOY. Sorry, dont think hes that good. Yes, he gets some steals & blocks, and rebounds very well for a SF, just not amazed with his on-the-ball defense. Its not bad, its just not as good as Bowens or Battiers. Maybe its a case of Shawn having to guard bigger guys, but thats what DAntoni wants, so Shawn is force to suffer a little bit too much in the post. So if Marion wants to blame anyone for not getting recognized for his defensive prowess, he should start with his coach.
T.Prince“He needs a nickname like Terradactyl or Albatross. Sorry for the aside, but he just reminds me of a terradactyl or albatross. Perennial defensive stalwart. Versatile defender who can guard 2s & 3s, and even some 4s & 1s in certain situations. Like a good defensive back, has great closing ability: an opponent will seemingly be by him, but Prince will close ground as well as anyone with the help of his supernatural reach.
Honor Mention: Ginobili; Brand; G. Wallace; D. Howard; J. ONeal; D. Stevenson; Dalembert; Kidd
“”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”
M.H.s Picks:
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
1. Tim Duncan, San Antonio
2t. Shane Battier, Houston
2t. Bruce Bowen, San Antonio
Jay Aych nearly convinced me to go with Bowen after telling me about this remarkable number: the PER for the shooting guards of San Antonio opponents is 11.8 [you rock, 82games.com] - thats a remarkably low number (remember the league avg is 15.0).
Of course, a good chunk of that is Manu, but Bowen guards plenty of 2s, too. And the end of the day, I still think that S.A.s perimeter D is fueled by the fact that Timmys back there to erase any mistakes. Hes my pick.
Kirk Hinrich and Marcus Camby round out my All-Defensive First Team along with the three guys above. And Zo is still my 6th man on D, with his 5.4 blocks per 48 min. A lot of noise for Marion to be in the mix - hes underappreciated and an All-Star overall, but I dont know how you judge him better than Battier or Bowen on D.

Western Conference 1st Round Preview
(1) Dallas vs. (8) Golden State:
A lot of folks excited for this series thinking that the high-octane Warriors have a shot at making this series competitive. I am not one of them. Dont care what G.S.s record is vs. the Mavs of late. Its the playoffs and Nellies teams always look a lot better in the reg. season.
Lets see, the Warriors are dead last in rebounding, the Mavs are one of the best board teams. Stunning, but Nellies Warriors are not very good defensively, while the Mavs are one of the best in the league. Also, the Warriors cause a lot of turnovers (which actually makes their defense look slightly better), but the Mavs happen to be very good at keeping turnovers down. And on top of that, its the playoffs where youre naturally more careful with the ball.
So basically if the Warriors cant get stops, or protect their def. glass, or cause the volume of turnovers theyre use to, how are they suppose to run like they want? Whos gonna check Dirk? Harrington could maybe do an alright job on him, but they have no else to help if Al cant.
The one thing that gives me a little pause that the Warriors might extend to 6 games, is Harrington at the 5 spot. He can cause major matchup problems because hes a legit 3pt. threat. Could keep Damp & Diop off the floor. The Warriors can spread you, and have multiple slashers to play off the shooting. Similar to defending the Suns, I would try to get them off the 3pt line, discourage the extra point per possession, let them drive, and consider fouling them more often”the Warriors only shoot around 70% as a team.
The Warriors are going to try to replicate the Suns playoff success. But the Suns have done that by being a deadly efficient offense. And even though the Warriors score a lot of points like the Suns, they are nowhere near as efficient. They dont shoot anywhere near as well from the foul line, 3pt. line or overall like the Suns do. Plus, they are even worst at rebounding & defense than even the Suns, something that has been the downfall of the Suns playoff runs. The only way the Warriors can make this interesting is if they go berserk from 3pt. land.
MAVERICKS IN 5
(2) Suns vs. (7) Lakers:
Rematch of a classic 1st round series. The difference this year the Suns have Amare & Kurt Thomas available, while the Lakers are the ones dealing with injuries. Even with Amare & Kurt around, the Lakers have to look to attack the post early & often. The Suns interior defense is still shaky and has been a major sorespot the last 2 years in the playoffs. Lakers brutalized the Suns last year down low with multiple guys, wont be able to manhandle the Suns in the painted area like last year, but have a feeling they can still be fairly successful. And whats good for the Lakers, post-ups are naturally built into their offensive scheme, and they also have a plethora of guys adept at posting: Odom, Walton, Bynum, Brown, & Kobe.
Went over the Suns rebounding concerns here, but they luck out in the 1st round playing the Lakers, who are no great shakes themselves. Another area where the Suns luck out is that they actually go into the series with the better defense for once. The Lakers were woefully inconsistent all year on defense. And lately theyve been hurting without the help of Kwames interior presence.
On defense, the Lakers must concentrate on getting the Suns off the 3pt. line as much as possible. Try to limit their 3pt. attempts to 15 per, and try to force the Suns into mid-range jumpers. If you have to sacrifice shots in the 8 ft to 21 ft range, you live with it. Also getting back in transition is huge vs. Phoenix.
The Suns actually did a solid job on Kobe last year. They always had multiple guys near him & they generally scramble well on the perimeter. But they must do a much better job in the interior where they got absolutely destroyed. With Amare & Kurt around it probably wont be quite as bad.
For the Lakers to compete they have to do what they did last year”pound the post. Phil has to run Kobe down low more often. And they have to get back to impede fast break points. And get the Suns off the 3pt line. Get some meaningful minutes from any of their points. Basically, the Lakers need a lot of things to work out perfectly to challenge in this series. But LA does have Kobe, and I expect that to be good enough for 2 wins. And if they could just tighten up their defense, they could make a series of it.
SUNS IN 6
(3) Spurs vs. (6) Nuggets:
Think this series will a little closer than some expect. Spurs had struggles vs. the Kings in the last years 1st because they caused some matchup problems for the Spurs. The Nugs matchup somewhat well with the Spurs. The main reason I think the Nugs could make this a tough series for the Spurs, is that no one guards Duncan better in my mind than Camby. Obviously wont shut down Tim, but I think Camby can make him work for his points as much as anyone. The Nugs can also throw another capable big at him in Nene. Also, Najera in limited minutes can be a nuisance & be physical with his 6 fouls to send the 65% foul-shooting Duncan to the line.
Even though the Nugs have Camby, Nene, & Najera up front, the Spurs are clearly a better overall defensive unit. This has a lot to do with how porous the Nugs perimeter defense is. I really see no way they are going to be able to contain Parker. Blake? Please. Iverson? Sorry, his defense aint special outside of steals. Also, not sure how they will bother Manu much either. While on the opposite end, Bowen can check Melo pretty well (though Melo could hurt him on the block), and Manu & Parker are underrated defenders. Plus, I expect a fair amount of sagging man to cut off lanes for Iverson & Melo and to force the Nugs to prove they can hit outside shots. Pop preaches the virtues of transition defense as much as any coach, which is key vs. the Nugs.
What allowed the Clips to dispose of the Nugs so easily last year? Basically, outside shooting, or Denvers complete lack of it (The Nugs were the easiest playoff team to defend). The circumstances are not quite as dire this year because Iverson helps relieve some double, triple-team pressure off Melo. But also the addition of JR Smith & mid-season emergence of Linas Kleiza have improved the outside options. The Nugs 3pt% for the season is barely better than last year, but Kleiza has come on the 2nd half of the season & JR Smith has proven his acumen. These guys must hit their outside shots to take pressure off Melo & AI. If these guys cant provide some long-distance relief, then this series might not be that close after all.
We all know how good Iverson & Melo are offensively, but I think the Spurs have the defenders & scheme to keep them in check. But on the other end, I just think Parker is going to shred the Nugs apart & easily find himself in the painted area. I think Karl is going to have to go to a Iverson-Smith backcourt more often because it gives the Nugs a better chance on defense & the ability to spread the floor better on offense. JR Smith very well could be the key to the Nugs fortunes. But no matter how well he plays, it wont be enough, because the Spurs are still the Spurs.
SPURS IN 6
(4) Rockets vs. (5) Jazz
One of the best defensive teams (Hou) vs. one of the best offensive teams (Utah). Also, two of the better rebounding teams. Interesting matchup issues in this series. First off, the Rockets will have their hands full dealing with Boozer. Houstons biggest flaw is trying to defend the 4 spot where they give up too much size & athleticism. On one hand Yao can work Okur over in the post, but Okur can cause problems himself by being able to drag Yao out to the perimeter. Interested to see if Kirilenko can regain some of his past defensive prowess because I assume he will get plenty of minutes assigned to TMac.
Utah does have a distinct advantage at the point with Deron. Deron carries himself like a 10-year vet and really understands how to use screens & runs the Sloans flex offense with precision. Though one thing that the Jazz dont do well (same as last year) is shoot the long-ball well (2nd worst in the league). This is where I see Van Gundy packing in the Rockets defense in on occasion, because a good flex offense is reliant on spacing. While the Rockets have proven plenty capable of sticking it from deep with guys like Battier, Alston, & reserve sharpshooter, Luther Head.
Along as McGradys back holds up & Yao is relatively healthy, Houston should be able to produce enough offense to neutralize the Jazzs efficient offense. The rebound battle should be a wash. And the Rockets have the upper hand on the defensive end over the gritty but foul-happy Jazz defense.

First Record LP I bought, first CD I bought
Yes, I am old enough to have had records. My mom had plenty, so I listened to them all the time (you know, cool stuff like John Denver, Barry Manilow & Neil Diamond). The first records that I remember buying were 45s. One was a song by Billy Joel that is so forgetable that I cant remember, but the B-side had a song called All for Leyna which I still remember fondly. The other 45 I remember getting was Donny Iriss Ah Leah. Leyna, Leah kindof strange that.
By the summer of 86, I had saved up enough to get the newest technological wonder, a CD player. Man I loved that thing. Seems a little clunky now, but it was cool. I cant remember which I got first, but the first CDs I bought were World Machine by Level 42 and The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby. Maybe not the coolest bands ever but both CDs are still listenable, which is not true of some. Level 42 was even the first over 21 concert I went to my first year of college. It was at the Stary Night, now known as the Roseland. Ive never seen anyone play bass like Mark King. He only used his thumb and it was impressive.
